What is diabetes?
The food that we eat is used by the body to produce energy. This energy is mostly in the form of glucose. The pancreas produce a hormone called “insulin”; this hormone is responsible for allowing and regulating the amount of glucose to be absorbed by the cells. If for any reason the body cannot produce enough insulin or use it effectively, the sugar level increases in the blood stream, instead of getting absorbed by the cells.
Can I stay healthy if I have diabetes?
Although diabetes is not curable, it is possible to live a long and healthy life. The most important factor when it comes to diabetes is controlling and regulating the blood sugar level. This can be achieved by taking medication, exercising, eating right and maintaining an ideal weight.

What can I eat if I have diabetes?
Being a diabetic does not mean you have to give up on good tasty food. It just means you have to regulate and monitor your eating. The main categories of food that you need to concentrate on is:
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are found in fruits, starchy foods, grains, dairy products, vegetables and beans. Instead of eating canned products, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products.
Proteins: All meat products are rich sources of proteins. Try eating white meat like fish and chicken rather than red meat. Cut the fat from your meat and keep poultry skin out of the dish you are cooking. Choose non-fat dairy products.
Fats: Apart from being found in meats and dairy products, butter, margarine, oils and lard add fat to your food. Keep away from fat rich dairy products, fried food, egg yolks, bacon and any high fat meat.
TIP: Before eating any fat-free versions of food check for the label for carbohydrates content as these products have added sugar.
In conclusion, diabetes does not have to put a stop to enjoying life. By following a few basic guidelines you can live the kind of life you want to. Remember the quality of your lifestyle is in your hands, with proper regulation, medication and monitoring you can take control of your life back!
Diabetes can be prevented by just having a physically active lifestyle. Just exercise everyday and avoid eating too much. Avoid sweets and high carb foods too.
