Eating Healthy on Low Fat Diet November 11, 2006

Eating a low fat diet does not necessarily mean that you have to give up on taste. The golden rules to a low fat diet are simple; less oil, less fat, less sugar and keeping fried at bay. That is the reason why most people find sticking to a low fat diet difficult and revert back to old unhealthy cooking styles.

How to keep it low fat and not loose out on taste:
The trick is to use substitutes and alter your cooking a little bit, and you will hardy notice the difference. You could try the following:

  • A non-stick cookware is an absolute must have. This will cut down your oil and fat usage drastically.
  • Replace butter and oil used for frying with wine or a little chicken broth.
  • A low fat diet does not mean you cut down on spices completely. Learn to experiment with different spices; adjust the spice according to your taste.
  • Use olive oil for cooking whenever possible. Apart from adding taste, olive oil is healthier.
  • If you are cooking a dish with vegetables and meat, cut down the amount of meat and pile up on the vegetables.
  • When using chicken or meat broth, remember to chill it first. This will make the fat rise up to the surface and make it easier for you to strain it.
  • Instead of using fat as a thickening agent for your gravies, use flour blended with milk or broth. Cook well and you will not loose out on taste.

A low fat diet should be just that, low on fat. A little bit of experimenting and variations in your cooking style is all that is needed to spice up your taste buds.
